Our new board members will join our existing board members in furthering Natural Medicine Journal’s mission to provide scientifically valid, patient-centered healthcare information to the medical community while promoting strong collaboration among the integrative medicine community. One of the main ways they do that is by serving as peer reviewers for the journal.
How the Peer-Review Process Works
Natural Medicine Journal follows the same peer-review process as other peer-reviewed medical journals. When a paper is submitted, it is first evaluated by Editor-in-Chief, Tina Kaczor, ND, FABNO. Kaczor decides whether to decline the paper, ask the author(s) for revisions, or progress the paper through to peer-review. If the paper is deemed a candidate for peer-review, 2 editorial board members are chosen to review the paper in a blinded process during which the reviewers do not know the identity of the authors and the authors do not know the reviewers’ identity. The reviewers have three options: decline, accept with changes, or accept as is.
“The peer-review process is time-consuming and requires a lot of effort from our volunteer editorial board members, but it is really the only way to ensure that the papers we publish stand up to the scientific rigor required for accurate, unbiased, and clinically valid information,” Kaczor explains.
“Our editorial board members are a critical part of the medical validation of the peer-reviewed content our journal publishes,” says Deirdre Shevlin Bell, vice president of content and communications, who oversees the peer-review process. “It’s also important to note that editorial board members are not compensated for this service. They perform this valuable task because they care about their profession and want to play a role in advancing scientifically vetted, relevant information to their peers.”
Natural Medicine Journal is proud to be one of the most widely read and circulated digital peer-reviewed journals for integrative healthcare professionals. The peer-reviewed papers are a valued part of the journal’s monthly content.
