Opportunity for NDs to be Part of Medicare’s New Diabetes Prevention Program
Beginning January 1, 2018, Medicare will pay for preventive treatment of diabetes - and NDs can apply to be providers.
The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a structured lifestyle intervention that includes dietary and moderate physical activity coaching. It consists of 16 weekly sessions in a group-based, HIPAA-compliant, classroom-style setting. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to accommodate eight to ten people as part of the Program. Provider payments will be up to $400 per person, per year.
The aim of the DPP is to provide practical guidance that will result in behavioral change to prevent adult onset diabetes in Medicare beneficiaries. After 16 core sessions, less intensive monthly follow-up meetings will help ensure that participants maintain healthy behaviors. The practical objective of the DPP is for participants to achieve a 5% or greater average weight loss.
The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be holding a webinar this Tuesday, August 9, from Noon-1:00 pm, ET to acquaint prospective providers with the opportunity. The AANP encourages NDs to register for the webinar to learn more. Further information about the DPP is available through this fact sheet and press release.
NDs who to apply to be DPP providers will have an opportunity to become part of Medicare as it evolves toward a more thorough and proactive model of prevention.
