The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 74% of adult Americans are either overweight or obese, putting them at risk of developing one or more serious health conditions. According to a 2022 analysis of data from two Finnish cohort studies featuring nearly 115,000 adults, and a separate United Kingdom cohort of nearly 500,000 people, obesity was strongly associated with 21 non-overlapping diseases across multiple organ systems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, infections, kidney disease, and musculoskeletal disorders. Other health issues associated with obesity include metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, obstructive sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.
