CALCIUM, VITAMIN D3 AND VITAMIN K2
The body uses 99 percent of its calcium to keep bones and teeth strong and to support skeletal structure and function. The other 1 percent of calcium is used for cell signaling, blood clotting, muscle contraction and nerve function with levels tightly controlled within a very narrow range in the blood and tissues. Calcium regulating hormones affect calcium transport in the intestines, bone and kidney; other nutrients play a role in the functionality and efficacy of calcium in bone health as well.
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)
- Improves calcium absorption. Vitamin D3 enhances the absorption of calcium in the intestines.
- Takes calcium from bone. When you don’t consume enough calcium, vitamin D helps to mobilize calcium from your bones into the bloodstream.
- Regulates synthesis of osteocalcin. Certain bone cells (osteoblasts) make the Gla-protein called osteocalcin, which is responsible for making sure calcium is deposited in bones. The synthesis of osteocalcin by osteoblasts is regulated by vitamin D3.
VITAMIN K2 (MK-7)
The term “vitamin K2” actually refers to a collection of more specific forms known as menaquinones. The “MK-7” form is most effective in:
- Stimulating reabsorption of calcium from the kidneys back into the bloodstream.
- Building bone by pulling calcium out of the bloodstream and holding it in the bones.
- Activating the calcium-binding capacity of osteocalcin.
- Protecting blood vessels from calcification.
When it comes to bone building and remodeling, vitamin D and vitamin K2 have complimentary functions; vitamin D mobilizes calcium out of the bones, and vitamin K2 pulls it back in.
With the help of vitamin K2, calcium is directed to the bones and not allowed to accumulate in other areas e.g., the arteries. You need both vitamin K2 and vitamin D in adequate amounts for optimal bone health.
OSTEOIMMUNOLOGY
Over the last 30 years, many mediators of immune cell function including cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors have been shown to regulate the activity of bone cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts). Beta Coxatene contains Cyplexinol®, an osteoinductive protein complex that binds to receptors with the GI tract where both osteoinductive and anti-inflammatory activity is generated.
